Defense Mechs In Lit Essays - Defence Mechanisms, Denial, Id

Barrier Mechs In Lit Who hasn't been harmed if their life? A friend or family member dying, a sweetheart tearing at the heart, a dismissal of something wanted. Everybody has certain worries wherein they need to manage and respond to. As the weight of the pressure mounts, certain degrees of nervousness emerge. How do people act in the profundities of this tension? Individuals have created changed counter measures called protection systems trying to go up against their issues. A large number of the speculations behind resistance components started with crafted by Sigmund Freud. Freud accepted that a contention existed between the id, self image and the superego. This represented the nerves inside human presence. Freud expressed that people utilize these instruments subliminally, and that it is typical and adequate to do as such. However a figurative line can be drawn. A line where whenever crossed can be harming to ones mind. It might cause the individual not to manage the circumstance or issue, but instead to quell them. Along these lines harming the individual or everyone around him further. The repressor doesn't manage his inclination straightforwardly. He shrouds them. Guides them utilizing the instrument. I will look at the utilization of guard components with regards to two works investigated in class. These are the film ?The Fisher King? furthermore, David Hwang's M. Butterfly. Both of the lead characters in every one of these works use protection components to veil certain torments that have caused struggle. There are equals and contrasts in the correlation of the two. The days reaching a conclusion. You've completed work and need some personal time to loosen up. So you get the spouse and head out to eat. Plunk down and unwind for what should be an agreeable night. However, your quietness is annihilated, decimated with the blast of a weapon. Repel's reality is pulverized by the demise of his significant other in the Fisher King. He is focused on a haven. At the point when he leaves and enters the world once more, his vision of the truth is obscured. Repel builds up various guard systems so as to battle the war in his brain. Repel at first structures what is known as constraint. This is the most ordinarily discovered protection system. It is essentially a constraint of the memory. Essentially, basically, overlooking? The suppression of the memory isn't lasting, nonetheless, as it is put away in the inner mind and can perpetrate the subject whenever. The put away recollections can frequently be savage to the subject and can prompt a ?passing out period? in which the subject will stir with no memory. Repel suffered what apparently was a great instance of constraint. He would not think about his better half from a typical perspective. He didn't glance back at affectionate recollections or at the time they had together. He basically attempted to overlook her. What's more, when recollections reemerged, he showed exemplary instances of suppression. The vicious upheaval followed by a timeframe where the memory would again be curbed until the following enthusiastic change. However, maybe the more charming resistance instrument utilized by Parry is that of imagination. Everybody has dreams. Be that as it may, Parry makes a world, a fantastical vision of knights and evil presences and the Holy Grail. Inside the film this plays very well as inferences and illustrations can be played off Parry dementia. The genuine memory of his significant other's passing is that of a red hot knight, coming to strike Parry. To hurt him. To obliterate his reality. There is a sure degree of closeness one accomplishes with the individual from the other gender. Would it be able to be conceivable to be that close for various years and not to understand a stunning truth? A reality that while one might not have any desire to get a handle on must be noticeably evident. I am alluding to M Butterfly. An adjustment of a play by David Hwang. Gallimard basically doesn't understand that Song is male. He considers her to be the encapsulation of women's liberation. While at the same time, she is acquiring privileged insights that will later denounce him. Gallimard shows an assortment of protection instruments. Be that as it may, these are experienced for reasons polar to Parry. While Parry instruments were intended to cover an occasion of the past, Gallimard

In an anthropological sense, mainstream society definition given by the writers of Common Culture: Reading and Writing about American Popular Culture, is â€Å"the shared information and practices of a particular gathering at a particular time† (Petracca Sorapure, 2007, p. 4). There are various of patterns. Three patterns that appear to be those of significant impacts in American style life today are promoting, TV, and innovation. Those patterns now and again worked in support of us, yet numerous individuals contended that they have been armful to the human life, particularly those subjects relates with topics of monetary and human individual cooperations. Following a representation of how those patterns impacts person’s life. Laura needs to have some good times, so she chose to take a crack at a tennis crew. Laura realized that most likely she should have a few costs, so she structured a financial plan for what she thought will be her expense to play tennis. Energizing she meets the others team’s individuals yet what happens was not anticipated. Her goal of fun transformed into a serious, distressing, and costly experience. Her concept of he costs needs to incorporate as well, her team’s costs objectives. Team’s chief center was to looks immaculate. Laura’s first arrangement was to wear any game garments with an open cost, however hold up a second, for the group nearness starts things out in any event, when that infer high costs. Satisfying the team’s needs Laura needs to purchase the best racquet. Second, was â€Å"necessary’ that she tries to purchase fresh out of the box new tennis’ outfit from the Nike store, particularly that outfit that Monica Puig wore at the Wimbledon competition. To wear that material implied a gigantic languishing over Laura who was esperate in view of her five additional pounds. She needed to look as thin as Monica does. Feeling overwarming for her five additional pounds, she chooses to proceed with her crucial. Another significant issue was not to overlook adornments like the spellbound shades, Oakley’s last version, tennis cap, sneakers, and the socks. It isn't important to make reference to that the embellishments should join with the Nike’s outfit tennis, they should be a similar shading and brand, on the grounds that recollect â€Å"first dead than basic. Laura realizes that her financial plan was crazy, yet it was past the point of no return. The most significant thing for her was that she was a piece of that â€Å"fantastic group. † This exhibit was to demonstrated how promoting and some â€Å"rules of beauty’ influenced a person’s dynamic. Promoting constantly incites an unnecessary commercializa tion. Roy Fox an America Journalist referenced that individuals expend more than they produce (Petracca Sorapure, 2007, p. 58). The publicizing isn't the main pattern impacting American mainstream society; other significant pattern is the TV. Individuals are insane to get into their homes and to fall into that lean back capable couch with the TV control in hands. They scarcely conversed with their youngsters or their couple. Most likely before watch the TV they will have more information. Without a doubt they will know about what's going on around the globe, yet their family connection is influences by that gatecrasher that live with them. The innovation is a primary supporter for upgrades in Jobs, scholastic examinations, digital correspondences, and significantly more. A Mother Daughter Relationship Essay

Most guardians expect numerous things from their kids however above all desire their kids to be fruitful and cheerful, yet guardians hold various desires dependent on their child’s sexual orientation. The desires that the two moms have are basic on the grounds that them two have girls. These distinctions in desires for sexual orientation can be found in writing, for example, Girl by Jamaica Kincaid where she will list everything a ladies is anticipated from doing in the house and in Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? by Joyce Carol Oates, the mother contends with her little girl to be progressively similar to her sister which is depicted to be great. Both of these moms have exclusive requirement in their girls and give them strong but fair affection in their child rearing. Moms hope for something else from their girls to be fruitful and by fulfilling sexual orientation jobs that society has made for them. The two moms in the writing show their enthusiasm for their littl e girls by satisfying certain sexual orientation jobs. In Girl we can disclose to her mom is posting what her little girl is required to do in the house to turn into the ideal housewife and she should likewise act a specific path into turning into a woman. In Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? Connie’s mother consistently analyzes her to her sister June; the mother favors June over Connie and needs her to be increasingly similar to her sister. June is everything her mom needs in a little girl while Connie isn't. â€Å"A conventional sexual orientation job direction underlines contrasts among people and expect that each sex has a characteristic fondness to specific practices. The individuals who keep up a customary sex job direction are probably going to be impacted by the standards and ceremonies of the ages that preceded them, by their folks and grandparents† (Blackstone 335). This statement from Amy Blackstone clarifies that sexual orientation jobs are partnered with past ages of the family, which can demonstrate that the moms are going down to their little girls what they have gained from their youth with their own moms. Moms frequently need their little girls to follow their strides and have particular sorts of models that must be met by them. Much of the time, this makes a correspondence hindrance somewhere in the range of theâ two and regularly driving them to have struggle among their relationship. We see this event more in the writing of Girl when her mom states â€Å" this is the means by which you iron your father’s khaki jeans with the goal that they don’t have a crease†¦ this is the manner by which you clear a corner; this is the means by which you clear an entire house; this is the manner by which you clear a yard† (Kincaid 47). The mother shows her girl how to iron and clean the manner in which she knows how to, involving that she should follow her moms strides since this is the correct way and that she should do it when one day she gets hitched or has a house. However, not all little girls have indistinguishable assessments from their moms, which can bring about having a correspondence hindrance as should be obvious in Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? the story states â€Å"Connie’s mother continued picking at her until Connie wished her mom was dead and she herself was dead and it was all over.† (Oates 324). Connie’s mother singles out her girl such a great amount in the story that it makes Connie not have any desire to have any relationship with her mom by wishing them two passing. As indicated by Estherann Grace who has an experts degree in pre-adult medication stated, â€Å"The quality of the mother/little girl bond adds to the force of the passionate reaction both contra rily and emphatically. This closeness stems to some degree from the normal mental distinguishing proof of a creating juvenile turning into a lady, following in her mother’s strides. The adolescent needs to explain the distinctions to build up her own identity.† (Grace 414) In request to illuminate their disparities Connie needs to converse with her mom about the issues the two of them have and converse with one another about their place of perspectives and make sense of the hidden message why her mom and her don’t get along. The two moms from the short stories show strong but fair affection for their little girls as one of their child rearing procedures. For Girl the mother reveals to her little girl â€Å"on Sundays attempt to walk like a woman dislike the whore you are so bowed on becoming† (Kincaid 47), she advises this to her little girl since she furtively thinks about how her girl will end up being as a lady. The mother utilizes a type of opposite brain science so her girl can refute her that she won't become a whore that her mom figures she will turn into. In Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? her mom broadcasts to Connie saying â€Å"Why don’t you keep your room clean like your sister? How’ve you got your hair fixed-what the heck smells? Hair shower? You don’t see your sister utilizing that junk.† (Oates 323) The mother grumbles to Connie to her since she needs her to becomeâ just like her more seasoned little girl since she appears to accept that her most seasoned got fruitful and that Connie is doing the direct inverse of the mother’s desires. In any case, in Connie’s perspective she renegades to being in any way similar to her sister since she has her own character and doesn’t need to tail somebody else’s strides. As indicated by Gregory Patterson â€Å"Kids need increasingly parental association. Regardless of whether it’s in setting exclusive standards and afterward considering youngsters responsible, or by being intently and ceaselessly included as you set a nd hold high standards.†(Patterson 4) With this being stated, Patterson would favor of the connections that the two moms have with their little girls since it causes the parent to turn out to be progressively associated with their youngsters lives since its giving the kid to hold exclusive requirements of the parent which later on will prompt positive results to the kid. In spite of the fact that these moms have one of a kind methods for child rearing, different guardians may state this sort of child rearing can aftereffect of mental maltreatment to their girls. Mental maltreatment is the parent’s conduct that can forcefully hurt their child’s emotional well-being (McCoy and Keen 123). We can see this mental maltreatment for the two written works, in Girl her mom alludes to the little girl to transform into a whore, which will purposely offend the . Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? the mother advises Connie to quit acting like she’s lovely on the grounds that she’s not. Connie states that these words are natural to her demonstrating that her mom loudly assaults her frequently which results into a mental maltreatment. As expressed by Monica McCoy and Stefanie Keen, â€Å"parents with honest goals may turn out to be verbally aggressive†¦whether the parent intentionally disregarded the kid, expected to hurt the kid with brutal words, or carried on out of ignorance.† (McCoy and Keen 125) The statement clarifies that even guardians who mean well to their youngster can at present accidently hurt them with unforgiving words that can cause the mental maltreatment towards the kids. All in all, moms hope for something else from their little girls to prevail in existence with what the mother has given to them changing from regular day to day existence to scholastics and furthermore by fulfilling sexual orientation jobs that society has made for ladies. While a portion of these sexual orientation jobs can be fought by their little girls, it will in all probability make correspondence hindrances between their moms relationship and cause a few issues between the two. As a parentingâ technique both the moms have depicted themselves as brutal and unfeeling moms however in all realty this brings up that they mean well for being so severe on their little girls. The two moms use however love in their child rearing to show what their little girls are relied upon of and to ideally direct their girls in existence with what the mother has instructed them. Tips for the Princeton Supplement to the 2013-14 Common App

I’ve always enjoyed working with students who are applying to Princeton.   As a group, they have interesting and engaged minds.   Extracurricularly, their accomplishments are varied and distinctive.   The Princeton application tries to elicit specifics about those facets of each applicant through its supplement.   In the age of streamlined â€Å"easy apps† and electronic application review that makes applicants seem more similar than different, Princeton is one of the colleges that seek to learn more about the person behind the papers. The section entitled â€Å"A Few Details† has been a part of the Princeton application for years, and applicants can truly address the categories in just a few words.   Complete sentences and lots of explanation aren’t necessary or even encouraged. As a Princeton applicant, you are no doubt intelligent, passionate, and accomplished.   Be that same intelligent, passionate, accomplished teenager in this section.   Your answers to these details need not all be highbrow, super-intellectual, SAT-word answers.   Resist the urge to be someone you are not in this section. Recently, there has been a lot of press about how a high school student should spend his or her summers to enhance college applications.   Princeton asks you to specifically detail your recent summer activities.   Whether you travelled extensively, studied intensely, or worked a full-time job, you learned something.   Think about those life lessons as you list your summer activities.   There may also be material for your longer writing sample lurking in those months of summer vacation. As a longer writing sample, Princeton offers four choices for candidates to write one essay of about 500 words. 1. Tell us about a person who has influenced you in a significant way. With this topic, it is easy to tell the reader a lot about the person who has influenced you, yet miss the opportunity to explain how that person’s influence has impacted you.   A strong essay does both, with an emphasis on the latter. If you considered answering the Common Application prompt about a place where you are content, this one takes the same sort of balance as the CA prompt. 2. Tell us how you would address the questions raised by the quotation below, or reflect upon an experience you have had that  was relevant to these questions. How can we unlearn the practices of inequality? In other words, how do we increase our capacities not just to act without racism but to actively promote racial equality? Imani Perry, Professor, Center for African American Studies, and Faculty Associate, Program in Law and Public Affairs, Princeton University. This is a great question to answer if you have actively engaged with issues of racial equality over the past four years. Perhaps, youve written research papers on the topic, or debated it. Maybe you have worked on political campaigns or been involved in social justice work. If you have felt the sting of racial inequality in your own life how do you suggest fixing the problem? 3. Using the statement below as a starting point, tell us about an event or experience that helped you define one of your values or changed how you approach the world. â€Å"Princeton in the Nation’s Service† was the title of a speech given by Woodrow Wilson on the 150th anniversary of the University. It became the unofficial Princeton motto and was expanded for the University’s 250th anniversary to â€Å"Princeton in the nation’s service and in the service of all nations.† Woodrow Wilson, Princeton Class of 1879, served on the faculty and was Princeton’s president from 1902–1910. 4. â€Å"Culture is what presents us with the kinds of valuable things that can fill a life. And insofar as we can recognize the value in those things and make them part of our lives, our lives are meaningful.† Gideon Rosen, Stuart Professor of Philosophy, chair of the Council of the Humanities and director of the Program in Humanistic Studies, Princeton University. 5. Using a favorite quotation from an essay or book you have read in the last three years as a starting point, tell us about an event or experience that helped you define one of your values or changed how you approach the world. Please write the quotation at the beginning of your essay. The final three topics all address one point: â€Å"Tell us about an event or experience that helped you define one of your values or changed how you approach the world.†Ã‚   Each of these questions is asking you, the applicant, to tell a story. Pick an experience, large or small, that impacted you, and share it with the admissions committee.   As you tell your story, ensure that you address its impact on you.   Your options in this question allow you to address this in any number of ways, from the most macro, global event, to a smaller, more personal moment.   Don’t be afraid to think, draw connections, and demonstrate maturity through your essay. Spiritual Reading The Great Divorce - Free Essay Example

What do you think of when youre imagining our inevitable end in heaven or hell? The Great Divorce, by C.S. Lewis, probably challenges some contemporary ideas of the subject. The book touches upon the ideas of what it might be like in the afterlife. Whilst wrapped up in the imagination of C.S. Lewis you experience the journey of traveling from hell to heaven, and you learn what it takes to become permanent in heaven. The book starts out describing the surroundings of the nameless character whos experiences you will follow for the remainder of the novel. Hes wandering these strange desolate streets with sparse signs of life; until he gets to the bus stop where there is a gleaming golden bus with people crowded around it causing a commotion. Then the story proceeds with the bus ride. People board the bus, and then it takes off into flight. The character describes looking out the window into a endless dreary town with only a few lights from houses scattered in the expanse. The sky is dusk. He meets several people in the bus that explain some things about the odd place, and how most people stay there because theyre not hoping for the dawn. As the bus carries further into the sky they reach a void. There is nothing, but then all of a sudden things start to get brighter and brighter until off in the distance he sees a cliff. As they reach the cliff things are so bright, theyre almost blinding. The character describes looking out the window again and describes the grass and the clear swift-moving river and how the bus is approaching the treetops. The bus lands and the passengers let out. After getting out of the bus he describes the confusion he has because everyone appears ghostly. No one is able to alter this seemingly intangible environment. He tests his limitations by trying to pick a small daisy, but it is cemented to the earth. He succeeds in picking up a leaf but says it was the heaviest thing hed ever encountered. He soon realized that he too was a ghostly manifestation. Then he sees these glowing people approaching the group of ghosts. The footsteps of the people echoed as they drew closer, they were wearing robes or nothing at all. When they were met, some of the people had known the ghosts, and they were paired off. The people were guides to the ghosts and were meant to help them understand the meaning of loving God and becoming solid within heaven. The character doesnt find his teacher right away, and he wanders off as the ground weighs heavily on his feet as walks. He eventually meets a Scottish man who is his spiritual guide. The story continues with several encounters of the character observing the other ghosts interact with their people. He watches one man successfully become materialized into the world, overcoming his one blunder, the lust which appeared as a small red lizard on his shoulder whispering into his ear. Until he granted a person permission to kill the lizard, he was bound as a ghost. He also witnesses another man fade away as he confronts an old wife whom he couldnt agree with. The wife was this beautiful person with animals and other people around her, everything in life that she touched and loved and left an indelible mark on. There was a common theme of these encounters. All the ghosts had to overcome some sort of thing that was holding them hostage in their life, either forgiveness or realization would free them. The character never really had to make this decision. Then suddenly everything changes, he is looking upon this silver table where the people are like chessmen, puppets. The puppets actions represented the wills of their giant masters. And the table is time. The people standing by are the immortal souls. Frightened he asks the teacher if the truth was revealed to him, then the Scottish man tells him that this is just a dream. And to not tell anyone unless he explicitly says it was only a dream. Then he wakes up, and thats where the book ends. This was quite an intriguing book to read. There was a constant bombardment of imagery, and at times it was difficult to follow the plot. You start off thinking that the main character is dead, and the plot will follow some of his experiences in the afterlife, but all the imagery gave the novel such a hazy feeling. In my opinion, because the character remained nameless, it allows the reader to be able to immerse themselves into the dreamy context of the novel. This book forces you to contemplate where your unforeseeable future after death may be. Personally, I dont contemplate the afterlife as much as someone would if they were dedicated to a religion. I choose to believe that when we die, there is nothing waiting for us. Our consciousness just ceases to exist. Our bodily matter will decompose, and our energy will cycle back into the ecosystem. Im definitely not exempt from fearing the impending doom of death, I just try to accept it. If our consciousness was to transfer to another plane of existence, I feel like we definitely wouldnt have any recollection of our previous life or lives. Whos to say that our current state of consciousness hasnt been elevated from a previous form already? And from stating that question, I would have to say that reading The Great Divorce has not helped me spiritually at all. Although spiritually the book didnt offer me much insight, I would highly recommend the novel to anyone who I think could understand some of the abstract concepts that C.S. Lewis brings up. I enjoyed the book for what it was, and for what it represented. In the eyes of the beholder, this book could be a fantastic gateway to exploring the prompts for spiritual contemplation.

Change in American Social Values in Thomas Mertons Rain...

A query from Thomas Merton: â€Å"Can’t I just be in the woods without any special reason?† (TMSM, 391). The question returns with each reading of Merton’s earlier works. And, the commonplace response of the newly introduced student to Merton comes not from the Trappist Monk, but from Dorothee Soelle in her book Theology for Skeptics: Reflections on God: â€Å"But must we really speak in this way?† (Sölle, 15). No doubt the gifted theologian realizes the truth in this hypothetical Socratic dialogue; even the most humdrum reader, too, should find the words contradictory but necessary. Indeed, Merton asked his rhetorical question in â€Å"Rain and the Rhinoceros,† an essay written in response to the changing of American (and International) social values,†¦show more content†¦He sought to focus upon the individual as a precursor of change, rather than the institution, or the Church, as the sole mechanism to accomplish informed action. Prec isely. Merton challenged convention. My thesis stands thus: Merton existed allotropically in his early years, focused on a monastic and contemplative life while at the same time promoting social change. Yet, his writing style strongly reflects the modernist thinkers he studied while at Columbia. The paper shall focus on the essays â€Å"Rain and the Rhinoceros† and â€Å"Fire Watch, July 4, 1952,† and present passages from his journals. It will also draw attention from other sources other than Merton’s own. Finally, it will conclude with the ideas of the author. ‘It will talk as long as it wants, this rain.’ â€Å"But they must know that there is wetness abroad† (TMSM, 391). A Thoreauvian statement. A Thoreauvian note as well in the laconic Mertonian reason: â€Å"Perhaps they even feel it. I cannot say† (TMSM, 391). An essay populated by surreptitious tendencies, â€Å"Rain and the Rhinoceros† depicts the culmination of a man leaving the modern world on his own accord. The aspect of the essay is about the attempt, by the hermit, to break away from the herd of everyday civilization and bask in the rain, a gift from the heavens that for the time Merton can simply enjoy, away from â€Å"a womb of collective illusion† (TMSM, 393). It’s an essay of prodigious strength concerning a

The Death Penalty Essay - 1262 Words

The death penalty is currently used by 34 states and is used by the federal government for punishing federal crimes. And in most cases the death penalty is used when the criminal has been convicted of murder. However, two people have been sentenced to death for the rape of a minor. The definition of the death penalty is: execution of an offender sentenced to death after conviction by a court of law of a criminal offense. This begs the question does the government have the right to take away someone’s life? And if so is it ethical and moral? Overall the goal of the Criminal Justice system is to give the right sentence and protect the people. Even though the death penalty does this, there are better more efficient ways to accomplish that†¦show more content†¦This is also known as an eye for an eye punishment. Although I agree that the criminal deserves rash punishment morale and ethical values come into play. Another great saying is two wrongs don’t make a right. The idea of punishing violence with violence essentially condones the use of violence. This has not yet been definitively determined but the fact that the government utilizes violence in a sense condones the use of it. At the very least, it may make it seem that vigilante justice is acceptable. So this doesn’t necessarily mean society is safer because it is not yet definitely decided that the punishment deters crime. Furthermore, the money that the punishment wastes could be used to make the community safer. As a result, the penalty has an adverse effect on public safety. A good example is the south has the most executions by far, and they also have the highest murder rate. So maybe if the government spent more money on making school systems better and making sure kids stay on the right track and don’t get involved in crime they would have to worry less about giving the death penalty. And therefore getting rid of the death penalty would be an easy decision. Along with the Moral and Ethical problems the death penalty has monetary problems too. The cost of housing inmates on death row and the extra cost of appeals results in a total extra cost of 65 million dollars a year. All of that money is being wasted on a criminal who isn’t even worth the time to kill him. Compare and contrast two ghost stories Essay Example For Students

Compare and contrast two ghost stories Essay The inclusion of the superstition of Midsummer adds to the suspense of where William actually was on Midsummer night. The grieving within the story is when William goes out of his way to avoid the spring because this is where his son drowned this shows that the theme of grief in ghost stories is prevalent, no matter when written, people will always grieve for loved ones who have died. Similarly in Harry when Mrs. James comes to the realisation that Christine has disappeared she feels grief, this emphasises her love for Christine and how a parent would grieve over a lost child. Grief is also the motivation for Harrys haunting his sister. Symbols are like signposts for the readers. This is because it makes you stop to think. In Harry the shadow of the white bushes symbolises the gap between life and death. Harry is within this gap and is desperate to resume his life with his sister or have his sister in death. Harrys spirit is in purgatory because of the fact that he is so fraught to love his sister again. The white roses are used to symbolise Harrys spirit because he died amongst white roses and whenever Christine saw Harry she was near a rose bush. Rosemary Timperley uses the colour white, which is symbolic because it is generally referred to as a ghostly colour. White is also symbolic of purity and innocence. The white bushes are used to lead you into thinking of the supernatural. As it is white and pale it also symbolises Harry being dead and him being in a different world. At the end of the story when the white roses turn red, a symbol of danger and Mrs. James feels Christine is in danger. The shadows of the rose bushes symbolise the paranormal world. We already know that Mrs. James has a fear of shadows She was in the shadow of the bush now. It was as if shed walked out of the world of light into darkness and the shadow is a symbol of a place of darkness where people do not understand what is happening. The main use of symbolism in Harry is the unexplainable act of the rosebush turning red. This symbolises how Mrs. James has been affected by the loss of Christine. I fell through the redness to blackness to nothingness, this expresses the suspense she goes through and how she slowly broke down after discovering Christine had disappeared. Red could also symbolise a violent death, such as the one of Harry. Thomas Hardy uses symbolism in the form of a miller-moth which symbolises the soul of William flying up into the air, or returning to God to be reunited with his son. Also the spring is a symbol of unification between the father (William) and his son, as the spring took his sons life but now shows the reflection of his face after his (Williams) own death. Dramatic twists at the ends of stories often make the reader realise something that was totally unexpected, and by doing this, the reader is forced to read the whole story. In Harry Rosemary Timperley ends her story with an unsolved mystery of the whereabouts of Christine. Harry picks Christine up from school and she is never seen again. The twist is how he returned for his long lost sister. The reader is left in suspense and wonders how Harry crossed over from the dead to the living world. Rosemary Timperley creates tension and suspense near the end when Mrs. James is frantically screaming and rushing back to school to pick up Christine. The writer knows that the readers are by now gripped by the unfolding story and cleverly heightens the danger towards a conclusion, which we can make educated assumptions about. .u6f52bcf1e23bff489989eb4d7e1e4970 , .u6f52bcf1e23bff489989eb4d7e1e4970 .postImageUrl , .u6f52bcf1e23bff489989eb4d7e1e4970 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u6f52bcf1e23bff489989eb4d7e1e4970 , .u6f52bcf1e23bff489989eb4d7e1e4970:hover , .u6f52bcf1e23bff489989eb4d7e1e4970:visited , .u6f52bcf1e23bff489989eb4d7e1e4970:active { border:0!important; } .u6f52bcf1e23bff489989eb4d7e1e4970 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u6f52bcf1e23bff489989eb4d7e1e4970 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u6f52bcf1e23bff489989eb4d7e1e4970:active , .u6f52bcf1e23bff489989eb4d7e1e4970:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u6f52bcf1e23bff489989eb4d7e1e4970 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u6f52bcf1e23bff489989eb4d7e1e4970 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u6f52bcf1e23bff489989eb4d7e1e4970 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u6f52bcf1e23bff489989eb4d7e1e4970 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u6f52bcf1e23bff489989eb4d7e1e4970:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u6f52bcf1e23bff489989eb4d7e1e4970 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u6f52bcf1e23bff489989eb4d7e1e4970 .u6f52bcf1e23bff489989eb4d7e1e4970-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u6f52bcf1e23bff489989eb4d7e1e4970:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: a) O2 b) HCl EssayWe care about the child and fear for her safety thus we dread the inevitable ending. Whereas Thomas Hardy concludes his story with William, being seen in two places at once, one was at the spring where his son had previously died, so the reader is lead to believe that he is going to be reunited with his son. It is not very tense, however it is emotional. This is because of the superstition of Midsummers Eve. As a reader I felt that Harry was a successful story. It was an enjoyable ghost story. Rosemary Timperleys clever use of the typical conventions of ghost stories creates a lot of tension; this tension was used hand in hand with our fear of death and the unknown to create suspense in the story. The ending of Harry is also effective because it is a repetition of the beginning of the story. This literary technique gives a silent explanation to what seemed to be a strange statement at the beginning Such ordinary things make me afraid. Sunshine. Sharp shadows on grass. White roses. Children with red hair. And the name Harry. Such an ordinary name. Although the ending is effective, it still leaves the reader wondering what happened to Christine. This leaves room for a sequel, but I feel this story alone is as effective as it needs to be. Overall I felt that The Superstitious Mans Story was more effective than Harry because it was an interesting ghost story with many superstitions related to the era in which it was written. Thomas Hardy linked the conventions of time and superstition in the story. On Midsummers Eve the ghosts of people who will die within the next three days can be seen entering the church but not leaving it. The significance of time is that the ghosts are only seen on Midsummers Eve. With these two conventions going hand in hand within the story, atmosphere and suspense is easily achieved. The last sentence of the story On inquiry it was found that William in body could not have stood by the spring, being in the mead two miles off; and it also came out that the time at which he was seen at the spring was the very time when he died creates efficient atmosphere and leaves the reader puzzled as how William was seen at two places simultaneously and leaves them pondering possibilities of supernatural events.

Creative Australia reflects the diversity of modern Australia and outlines the cultural heritage and creative industry that happened to be a vital industry in the historic past of Australia and has been helping to create a bright future in the same field (Caust 2014). However, in the recent time, it has been observed that the gover nment has been focusing on this part of the society as well and better approach has been made to create the artists and the creative people in a better way. Thus, a critical analysis of the current situation of the governmental policy towards Creative Australia shall be carried out in this study. Keeping all these perspectives into consideration, Australian government has elevated to improve the cultural perspective as a part of the political agenda. Creative Australia has recognized the centrality of creativity, art and culture across the whole nation and how effectively government can play a significant role in improving the condition of the society. Government is focusing on engaging people in the various art and cultural activities. In this respect, the impact and influence of the digital tools and media cannot be denied. The digital tools have helped in fostering and building the socio-cultural perspective of creativity. This in turn has also helped to create more job opportunities and unimaginable participation of people in the field of art and culture (Altman 2013). Keeping all these consequences into consideration, serious actions have been taken by the government of Australia and the Australia Council have been found to redesigned for the purpose of getting better outcome from the overall situation. It has been found that more people have been found that more people engaged in developing a broad peer assessment on the Au stralian artists. A more flexible structure has been designed to form the broad structure for the platform of the artistic talent. Severe discussions were made to make out things in a proper way and create collaboration with other nations or countries (Cowen 2009). This shall help Australia to achieve a strong hold of the overall approach made towards the artistic field. In order to expand the process of the creativity and traditional heritage of the nation, it has been found that there were major organizational bodies that partnered with other and mandate a support of growth in the particular field. In fact, this approach was made towards a business perspective that shall help the nation to gain profit from the overall activities. Therefore, the government at the different level was found to participate in the overall development of the culture and other creative areas. Far sighting this approach of profitability, it was seen that the government had invested more than $1.5 million in these aspects (Caust 2014). It was ensured that the creative and other artistic means such as the songs and the dance shall continue without any kind of hindrance in the process. Further, it was found that in order to make the things acceptable among the population of the country, some practices needed to be carried on that would eventually help the population of the co untry to understand the value of the artistic and creative field of the nation. Thus, investment was made to build a number of museums and other such places that shall reflect the creativity of the nation. In fact, the media also played a significant role in this by informing the population about the advent of these places. Soon these places were popularized and the nation saw a new glace of artistic talent in the era of scientific development (Gray 2004). The art museums, galleries and libraries do not only have huge collection of paintings and figurines but it also contained a huge collection of songs, films and other such divisions of art. Explanation and Evaluation: Evaluating the concept of Creative Culture undertaken by the government of Australia, it can be said that the federal government of Australia has made successful strategic planning by the partnering with the artists, philanthropists, educational institutions and with the community groups as well. This way, the government has been successful in inspiring people and pursued a leadership approach with better diligence and commitment (Mcdowall 2013). A well trained and diligent group of creative partners have been helping in advancing the stages of art and culture in the country. In fact, the Australian artists have also been found to make their domination in the international market as well. The media made them more popular among the other nations. Soon, it was found the popularity and the acceptability of these artists kept on increasing and Australia could be easily known by the name of these famous artists rather than as a country for the best cricket players (Gray 2004). In order to introduce new acts for the purpose of creative Australia, a number of significant steps have been taken. Government has supported the steps by making better funding decisions. For instance, the government has modernized the governance structure for the Australian council that has successfully helped to adapt the changes and the emerging trends of the art and the culture (Throsby 2006). In fact, the Government has been found to invest about $75.3 million for the artists and the art organizations. This has allowed the council to carry out more development and researches in the field of art and creativity. $39 million has been observed to be transferred for the regional touring programs and another $22.8 million for the visual art and craft strategy (Gibson 2014). All these strategies have been undertaken to improve the artistic and the cultural excellence of the nation. Understanding the value of this field and the increasing demand of artists, many people were also found to try out their career in the artistic field. It was not necessarily that the artists had to perform in the live streaming only, but the artists chose any option to present their talent to the public (Rowe et al. 2016). It was found that people recorded their video and made it publicized among the people through the various channels of internet. The power of the social media sites like the Facebook, Twitter, YouTube cannot be declined. It has helped many artists to reach out that point of success that many crave for (Idriss 2016). Another important point of consideration is that the artistic talent was not limited to certain areas like songs or dance but it was found that various artists came up with various themes of serving people (Westwood 2013). For instance, it was found that many artists were focusing on the other aspects of the culture, like the visual arts, design and in f act as a part of comedy show as well. In the later stage, it was evident that Australia welcomed many other artists from around the world to participate in the talent hunt. People started liking these shows and the popularity of these shows increased from time to time. Critique: As commented by Gibson (2014), there has been a drastic change in the traditional artistic and creative means that used to carry on in the nation of Australia. The advent of media and technology has improved the situation to a large extent. With the help of the technological development, it has become easier to reach out people even in the international sphere. This way, the nation has been gaining identity in the sphere of art and creativity. The cultural policy of Australia has shaped the cultural aspect of the country and has helped to gain the things that had been long been remained concealed under the influence of other developments (Dovey et al. 2016). However, there are certain challenges that the new cultural policy of the nation has been facing in the recent time. The challenges include the decision of the government to invest in the field of art and culture instead of advancement in other fields like education and science. Much have been debated on the fact that for the dev elopment of a country, investment shall be made on better research and development and in the scientific technology and not for conserving the art and the heritage of the nation (Bennett et al. 2015). However, keeping the demand of the market into consideration, it has become evident that the demand of artistic talent has been increasing. Thus, if certain approaches are made that would improve the art and culture of the nation, it should be welcomed. If the approach of creative Australia is compared with the other nations of the world, it can be said that many other countries have also been found to invest in the creative field as well (Power 2016). Countries like India, Spain and other European countries as well have well integrated structure for the artists and the creative people. In fact, a good sum of money is kept for improving the creativity and the cultural heritage of the country. Suzor et al. (2014) have commented that for some countries the traditional approach is a part of the culture of the country and thus, the government has to spend on this. However, it might not be same for the case of Australia. Thus, the debate of whether the government should participate in the improvement of the artistic and the cultural aspect of the country still continued (Daniel 2016). There were many reforms that were conducted as a part of increasing the value of the artist and create a better stand for them. In order to change the scen ario, several policies were designed that ultimately created a storm and a change in the overall cultural policy of the country. With all these reforms, the artists also relieved their part of life and they were given the equal rights and opportunities in the society like other professional experts. Conclusion: Adetailed discussion on the governmental policy for improving the approach towards the creative Australians has been carried. It has been observed that the artists and the creative people have been given much opportunity in the recent time to show their talent in front of the nation and the world. Governmental policies have included funding and investing on the various parts that relates to the artistic talent. The government has been helpful enough to provide them the opportunity to come up with their talent and show it to the world. The media has played a significant role in reaching out the public in both domestic and the international forum. The artists who perform on various types of creative activities have been provided with major opportunities that would support their talent and helped them to prosper in life. This way it can be said that the government is supporting all the professions of the nation. References: Altman, Jon. 2013. Indigenous cultural policy: Creative Australia or creative accounting? Feminism Essays - Gender Studies, Gender, Womens Rights, Gender Role

Feminism Essays - Gender Studies, Gender, Womens Rights, Gender Role Feminism Of what historic and contemporary concern is it that the architecture profession has been, and continues to be, strongly male dominated in Australia (currently 90% of registered architects in NSW are men). Ideally, what proportion of the profession should women occupy and why? From the start of human history, we always experience certain level of inequality between sexes. It can be seen everywhere around the world and is a concern to everyone, both men and women. This inequality is an important issue within the workforce of many professions, such as being an architect, landscape architect, city planners and designers within the built environment. Industrial revolution is the onset for women to become segregated from home, creating greater spatial division to impact on gender roles. There is common concept between the relationship of public and private space with male and female as described by Kate Lyons, PUBLIC Male Economic and Political WORK PRIVATE Female Reproduction and Domestic life HOME This model represents the suburbanisation occurring in the late 19th century and the early 20th century. Many suburban women are forced within their daily activities due to the constraints on accessibility and mobility in low-density suburbs and lead to a feeling of being isolated from the inner city. These constraints of this gender role affect the women's ability in the broader professions within the built environment, as they were restricted at home. Architects do not like to employ women in their offices; contractors do not like to build from their plans; people with money to spend do not like to entrust its expenditure to a woman. This is probably due to the fact that women are kept at home without 'knowing much' of the 'outside world'; the design professions have intrigued women into marginal roles. Architects and other similar professional fields have perceived women not as profession but as passive clients. From these, women are users of the designed built environment as there are only few to have the opportunity to design them. This forces women to adapt to the way environments have been designed (by men). There is a concern where many women architects, landscape architects, planners, builders and designers such as Catharine Beecher, Louise Bethune. Eileen Gray, Julia Morgan, and others are not formally identified with professions. Many of their works have been credited to their male colleagues. Another concern is that there is a lack of sensitivity towards women's needs within the built environment. Design strategies and schemes often fail to consider women as a disadvantage group with exclusive needs, many of these needs are inadequately met or even un-met. This was evident in several Local Environmental Plans and Development Control Plans of the Sydney Metropolitan area that had not identified women as a disadvantage group to be included amongst the handicapped and elderly in design issue. Having considered women's issues within the built environment, in concluding one must ask are the fundamentals of professions of the built environment gender biased? Whilst the outcomes of these are gender biased, the fundamentals of planning require subsequent analysis in order to resolve the question. not only do men and women view a common world from different perspectives, they view different worlds as well. The issues raised are not subject to strictly to women, but men also experience them though with less intensity. In addressing these issues a gender sensitive environment will be beneficial to all.
